CLEARWATER, Fla. - Connor Seabold struck out a career-high nine batters in his second start for the Clearwater Threshers on Wednesday afternoon at Spectrum Field, but the Threshers fell 6-4 in the third game of a four-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads.
The righty pitched five scoreless innings to start the game for Clearwater (1-6), but exited with two men on in the sixth.
Stone Garrett reached base for Jupiter (5-2) on a single to left field and stole second. After a walk drawn by Riley Mahan, manager Shawn Williams made the call to the bullpen bringing in Aaron Brown to pitch in relief.
With Seabold still responsible for runners on first and second, Will Allen walked to load the bases, and John Silviano sent a ground ball past second and into center field to bring in two and put Jupiter on the board 2-0.
Seabold would take the loss, giving up two earned runs on two hits with three walks and a career-high nine strikeouts in his 5.1 innings of work.
With two away, Boo Vazquez hit a three-run home run over the right field fence, bringing home Allen and Silviano to make it 5-0 Hammerheads.
The Threshers crept closer with four runs in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to one.
Jose Gomez hit a line drive double to left, followed by a single to right from Kevin Markham and a walk by Luke Williams to load the bases. Back-to-back strikeouts put two away, but Darick Hall shot a ground ball through the left side for a two-run single to put the Threshers on the board and cut the lead to 5-2.
With two outs and men on the corners, Edgar Cabral reached on an error off the glove of third baseman Rodrigo Ayarza to score Williams. Wilson Garcia then singled on a ground ball to center to send Hall across the plate, making the score 5-4.
The Hammerheads got some insurance in the ninth, when Garrett singled home a run off reliever Felix Paulino to push the Jupiter lead to 6-4.
The Threshers play their final game in a four-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday, with Taps and Tacos Night presented by Tijuana Flats. Adonis Medina (1-0) will get the nod for the Threshers against Robert Dugger (0-1) for the Hammerheads. The first pitch will be at 7 p.m. with Kirsten Karbach on the call for the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
