CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Threshers used the long ball to take the series opener over Daytona, belting three home runs in a 6-2 victory over the Tortugas on Monday night at Spectrum Field.
Henri Lartigue, Luke Williams, and Jose Pujols each went yard for Clearwater (13-11) (45-47) as the Threshers rattled off 12 hits, backing a strong six innings from starter Alejandro Requena.
Requena (2-2) worked around a runner at third with nobody out in the top of the first, striking out Randy Ventura and Taylor Trammell swinging before getting Tyler Stephenson to fly out to center to end the threat.
Lartigue gave Clearwater the lead in the bottom half.
On a 2-1 pitch from Scott Moss (10-3), Lartigue lined a shot over the wall in left for his sixth homer of the season, giving the Threshers a 1-0 advantage.
Daytona (13-12) (50-41) pulled even in the third, after Michael Beltre opened the frame by splitting the right-centerfield gap for a triple. Randy Ventura brought him home with a grounder to first, bringing the teams even at one apiece.
The tie held until the fifth, when Raul Rivas opened the frame with a single, breaking up a string of 10-straight set down by Moss. Kevin Markham followed with an infield hit toward the hole at short.
With one down, Williams got the green light on a 3-0 pitch and crushed a three-run shot into the bullpen beyond the left field wall, giving Clearwater a 4-1 lead on his ninth home run of the season.
After Lartigue walked, Pujols launched a two-run shot to left-center to open up a 6-1 lead on his team-leading 13th round-tripper of the season.
Requena worked six strong innings in the start, limiting Daytona to just a run on five hits and a walk, while racking up a season-high eight strikeouts.
The Tortugas grabbed a run off reliever Grant Dyer in the eighth, when Stephenson's two-out single scored Ventura to make it a 6-2 game, but Williams came up firing from left and the Threshers nabbed Stephenson trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Addison Russ finished it off, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.
The Threshers will meet the Tortugas for game two of the series on Tuesday, with first pitch at 7 p.m. Felix Paulino has the start, opposed by Reds rehabber Rookie Davis. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 6:45 p.m.
