Manning Hurls Quality Start as Erie Wins Second Straight

The Erie Piñatas (SeaWolves), took advantage of Trenton miscues as they took their second straight over the Trueno (Thunder), 3-2, in a Copa de la Diversión game on Saturday night at ARM & HAMMER Park. Trenton jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Matt Manning.

Trenton jumped ahead in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Matt Manning. Hoy Jun Park led off with a single. Gosuke Katoh followed and reached on a Sergio Alcántara error putting runners on the corners. Ben Ruta grounded out to second, scoring Park for a 1-0 lead. Katoh stole third and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
Erie cut into the lead in the second against Trenton starter Garrett Whitlock. Alcantara singled with one out but was erased at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Cole Peterson. Peterson stole second and scored on a Cam Gibson base hit making it a 2-1 game.
Peterson led off the fifth with a walk but was erased at second on a fielder's choice form Gibson. Luke Burch followed, laid down a bunt single and on a throwing error by Whitlock, Gibson scored from first to tie the game 2-2.
Erie took the lead in the seventh against reliever Brooks Kriske. Alcantara led off with a walk and stole second. With one out, Gibson laced an infield single off the glove of a diving Brandon Wagner on first. The ball redirected towards Katoh at second who fielded and threw away. The third Trenton error allowed Alcantara to score for a 3-2 lead.
Three Erie relievers, Nolan Blackwood, Will Vest and Drew Carlton, combined to keep Trenton off the scoreboard for the final three innings of the game, preserving the win. Carlton worked a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts to earn his third save in as many chances.
Manning (5-3) earned the win in tossing his seventh quality start. The righty allowed two unearned runs on five hits with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts in six innings of work. He was able to hold Trenton scoreless over his final five frames.
Kriske (0-1) took the loss allowing an unearned run on one hit with three walks and a strikeout in 1.1 innings of relief.
Whitlock took the no-decision for Trenton allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
The SeaWolves and Thunder meet in the third game of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Righty Kyle Funkhouser (0-0, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Trevor Stephan (0-3, 6.35 ERA).
