Hartford, CT -The Hartford Yard Goats fell to the Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves, 3-1 on Thursday night at Dunkin' Park. Erie starter Carlos Pena and three relievers held the Yard Goats to just one run to win the third game of the six-game series. Hartford scored its only run in the seventh inning on Jared Thomas’ RBI single, his third hit of the game. The Yard Goats had the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings, runners at second and third in the ninth, and left 14 men on base. Jack O’Dowd had four hits, including a double and Hartford starter Stu Flesland III matched a season-high with seven strikeouts over five innings.
The SeaWolves struck first in the opening inning when Seth Stephenson lined an RBI double to left field, scoring Roberto Campos to give Erie a 1-0 lead. Stephenson later came around to score on a passed ball, extending the SeaWolves' advantage to 2-0.
Flesland kept Erie off the scoreboard over the next several innings and finished his outing with five innings pitched and seven strikeouts, matching his season high. The left-hander lowered his ERA to 1.91.
Erie added to its lead in the sixth inning when Stephenson collected his second RBI of the night with a single to left field, scoring E.J. Exposito and making it 3-0 SeaWolves.
Hartford finally broke through in the seventh inning. Tevin Tucker reached base and came around to score when Jared Thomas lined an RBI single into center field, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Yard Goats were unable to generate any further offense against a strong Erie defense and bullpen as the SeaWolves held on for the 3-1 victory.
