Hooks Pop Frisco

May 11, 2013

CORPUS CHRISTI - David Martinez and Mike Foltynewicz enjoyed great run support as Corpus Christi cruised to a 9-3 triumph over Frisco Saturday night before before 6,322.

Frisco (18-17) mounted a three-hit threat in the second against Martinez, but came away unfulfilled when the right-hander coaxed a bases-loaded fielder's choice from Alejandro Selen.

The Hooks (21-14) followed through on their two-out promise during the home half. Erik Castro ripped a single into right field and Enrique Hernandez' third home run of 2013 ricocheted off the left-field foul pole.

The wheels came off for RoughRiders starter Martin Perez the next inning as Corpus Christi sent 10 men to bat. The Hooks struck for six runs on five hits and two errors, the outburst punctuated by Castro's two-run double and a two-run single from Jonathan Meyer. George Springer touched off the scoring with an RBI double. He added a minor league-leading 12th homer off Jimmy Reyes in the seventh.

Perez (0-1) was gone after Rene Garcia and Springer stroked consecutive one-out singles in the fourth. Perez surrendered eight runs, nine hits, walked two and struck out one. His relief, Ryan Rodebaugh, struck out five over 2 2/3 innings.

Martinez (5-0) allowed his first earned run in 25 2/3 innings and six outings when Odubel Herrera's bases-loaded single to right plated Tomas Telis in the fifth. Martinez was responsible for two runs, six hits, a walk and three strikeouts in five prescribed frames.

Then came Foltynewicz, the Astros' 2010 first-round draft choice. In his Whataburger Field debut, Foltynewicz touched triple digits on the radar gun. He earned a four-inning save (two hits/unearned run/ strikeout).

Telis owns an eight-game hitting streak. The Frisco catcher contributed three singles, including a late run-producer.

Ruben Alaniz (0-3) pitches for Corpus Christi Sunday at 1:05 vs. Carlos Pimentel (3-1) in the series finale. The first 2,500 fans take home a Hooks Pink Cap from CHRISTUS Spohn.
