TinCaps slug past Captains

(Fort Wayne, IN) – The Lake County Captains (18-17) fell 10-2 to the Fort Wayne TinCaps (15-19) on Saturday from Parkview Field. The TinCaps connected for eight extra base hits in the contest.

Fort Wayne got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff single for Jonny Homza was followed by a two-run home run from Agustin Ruiz to put the TinCaps on top 2-0.

Lake County cut into the TinCaps lead with a run in the second to make the score 2-1. George Valera walked to lead off the frame. He stole second base, then moved to third on a fly-out from Raynel Delgado. With two outs Joe Naranjo delivered an RBI single to left field to put the Captains on the board.

Back to back walks with one out in the third came back to bite the Captains starter Eric Mock. With one down and runners on first and second Dwanye Williams-Sutton singled to center that scored Homza just ahead of the tag from Bryan Lavastida. Williams-Sutton reached second with Ruiz advancing to third. Still with one out, Tirso Ornelas doubled down the right field line to add two more runs to the TinCaps total. After a strikeout, Justin Lopez lifted a high fly to right field that barely cleared the wall for a two-run home run to make the score 7-1, TinCaps.

With one out in the top of the seventh inning Austen Wade walked, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs Will Brennan connected on a double to plate Wade and cut the TinCaps lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the seventh the TinCaps responded. With one out Ornelas doubled to left-centerfield. Ethan Skender got hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Lopez came to the plate with one out and chopped a ground ball to Naranjo at first base. He stepped on the bag and fired to second but the throw escaped Brayan Rocchio at shortstop. Skender raced to third base. Valera came up firing in center but his throw got knocked away from Delgado at third allowing Skender to score on two throwing errors. Back to back doubles followed from Luis Almazar and Adam Kerner that pushed another run across to make the score 10-2, TinCaps.

Mock (0-1) tossed 2.2 innings in his Captains debut to take the loss. He allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Brandon Komar (2-2) completed two scoreless innings on the mound for the TinCaps to earn the win. He did not allow a base runner and struck out two.

Mason Hickman takes the mound on Sunday for the Captains. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. from Parkview Field.
