(Lansing, MI) – The Lake County Captains’ (3-2) offense was shut out for the first time in 2021 on Saturday night in Lansing. Four Lansing Lugnuts (2-3) hurlers held the Captains scoreless on four hits and a two-run third inning propelled Lansing past Lake County, 2-0.

The Lugnuts’ third inning started with a Max Schuemann leadoff double. He later stole third and scored when the throw by catcher Bryan Lavastida skipped into left field. Michael Guldberg hit a solo homer to left field later in the inning.

Jeff Criswell got the start for Lansing in his professional debut. The right-hander held the Captains to one hit over two scoreless innings. Shohei Tomioka followed with three scoreless frames, in which he struck out two and surrendered just two hits. Tomioka (2-0) ultimately earned the win. Colin Peluse followed Tomioka with three scoreless frames, which included three strikeouts, one hit and three walks.

The Captains threatened in the top of the ninth against Peluse, but could not push a run across. Lavastida and

George Valera both walked to start the inning, which prompted Lansing to go back into their bullpen. Aiden McIntrye struck out the first two men he faced, Joe Naranjo and Austen Wade, then forced a soft ground out back to the mound to stifle the Captains’ threat and end the game. McIntyre (1) picked up the save.

Matt Turner

(0-1) took the loss for the Captains in his first start of the season. The Lugnuts scored both their runs off of Turner. The lefty struck out one and allowed three hits.

Lake County and Lansing will play the final game of the season-opening series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. from Jackson Field.
