Gaddis deals but Captains fall to Dayton

(Eastlake, OH) – Hunter Gaddis hurled 5.2 one run innings on the mound for the Lake County Captains (60-51) in a 4-1 loss to the Dayton Dragons (58-54) on Friday night at Classic Park.

Gaddis worked a perfect first three innings before allowing his first hit in the top of the fourth. He worked around a jam in the fifth, stranding runners in scoring position in both innings.

Dayton broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the sixth. With two outs and nobody aboard, Matt McLain lined a double off the wall in left-center. Captains Manager Greg DiCenzo came out to talk with Gaddis, but left the starter in the game. Ivan Johnson then muscled a broken-bat single into right-center to score McLain and put the Dragons in front, 1-0.

Quin Cotton led off the top of the seventh for Dayton with a line drive solo home run to left field to give the Dragons a 2-0 advantage. The Captains reliever Andrew Misiaszek walked the next two batters to put Allan Cerda on second and Juan Martinez on first. After recording two outs, Jack Rogers ripped a ground ball to first base that snuck under the glove of Micah Pries down the right field line. Cerda and Martinez both scored on what was ruled an error by Pries to push the Dayton lead to 4-0.

After Dayton starter James Marinan left the game following the sixth inning the Captains offense capitalized. Jhonkensy Noel got hit by a pitch from Dayton reliever Jake Gilbert to open the seventh. Micah Pries followed with a double that hit the left field chalk and rolled into the corner. Noel scored all the way from first to cut into the Dayton lead, trailing 4-1.

Marinan (1-0) earned the win in his High-A debut. He spun six shutout innings, allowing just one hit to the first batter of the game on a Christian Cairo single. He walked two and struck out 11.

Gaddis (4-10) took the hard luck loss. He allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out nine.

Vincent Timpanelli (4) earned his second save of the series and fourth of the season for Dayton. He worked the final 1.1 innings without allowing a base runner and striking out three.

Daniel Espino is scheduled to take the mound on Saturday for Lake County. First pitch between the Captains and Dragons is set for 6:35 p.m. at Classic Park.
