Aeros' Wright combines on one-hitter

Friday may not have been Steven Wright's best start of the season. And that just speaks to how dominant he's been.

The Indians prospect struck out six over six innings and combined with two relievers on a one-hitter as the Double-A Akron Aeros rolled to a 10-2 victory over the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium.

Wright (4-2) lost his no-hit bid in the fifth inning when Reese Havens connected on a one-out homer to right field. It ended a streak of 10 batters retired by the University of Hawaiʻi product.

Binghamton scraped together another run without a hit in the sixth against Wright as Kai Gronauer reached on an error by shortstop Davis Stoneburner and scored on Rylan Sandoval's ground ball.

Wright walked two and was charged with both runs -- one earned -- to win for the first time since May 6.

A 2006 second-round Draft pick, he's quietly been consistent all year, holding opponents to one earned run or fewer in eight of nine starts. The 27-year-old right-hander ranks third in the Eastern League with a 1.72 ERA.

Wright opened a 1-2-3 first inning by striking out Mets' No. 15 prospect Matt Den Dekker, then worked around a leadoff walk in the second. He struck out three straight batters between the third and fourth innings and got Eric Campbell swinging to start the fifth before Havens -- one of the Mets' first-round picks in 2008 -- connected on his second longball in 29 games.

Kyle Landis replaced Wright to start the seventh and got a double-play ball from Travis Ozga to help erase a walk and an error. He also pitched the eighth before Bryce Stowell struck out one in the ninth to finish off the Aeros' fourth straight win.

For Wright, the start was one of his best in a season dotted with nice lines. He hurled a five-hit shutout on May 6 against Bowie, less than a month after allowing a run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings to beat Trenton.

Akron was sparked by leadoff man Tim Fedroff, who went 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Adam Abraham and Nick Weglarz both homered to send the B-Mets to their sixth straight series-opening loss.

Binghamton starter Gonzalez Germen (1-4) matched a season high with nine strikeouts but allowed six runs -- four earned -- on four hits over five innings.

Brandon Moore made season debut for the B-Mets in his return from a 50-game drug suspension issued last Sept. 16. The 26-year-old right-hander, who gave up two runs on three walks and a hit in the sixth, was a South Atlantic League All-Star in 2010.
