Bisons Thunder With Six in Seventh

Fernando Martinez hits fifth homer of the year in win
May 18, 2009
PAWTUCKET, RI - The Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, teed off on the Pawtucket Red Sox for nine runs Monday night, winning 9-2.

Pawtucket was the first team on the board, plating two runs in the second inning on walks by Chris Carter and Travis Denker. The runners were batted in by an Angel Chavez double.

That would be all Fernando Nieve would allow for the Herd. The first-time Bison went six innings in his debut. Nieve allowed three hits while striking out seven and walking six.

The better news for Nieve was that he got mammoth run support. The Bisons first struck in the fourth with three singles. The final single was by Javier Valentin. Cory Sullivan, who began the charge, came home to score to make the game 2-1.

Fast forward the action to the sixth inning when Fernando Martinez came to the plate with one out against Enrique Gonzalez. The left fielder belted a pitch over the right field fence to tie the game at two.

The Herd really broke things open in the seventh inning when 11 batters came to the plate. Buffalo combined four hits with two walks and two PawSox errors to plate six runs and take an 8-2 lead. Robinson Cancel began the attack when he bunted down the third base line. He was advanced by a Mike Lamb single and scored on a Feliciano double down the line in right. Chris Carter was playing in at first with Feliciano threatening bunt earlier in the at-bat.

The double by Feliciano knocked the starter Gonzalez from the game in favor of Chris George. He faced only four batters and allowed the latter three to reach. Argenis Reyes was walked intentionally, Sullivan reached on an error and Martinez was walked. Former Met Rocky Cherry then came into the game only to allow Wily Mo Pena to reach on an error and Valentin on a single. All would score except the final two to reach. Sullivan, Feliciano and Valentin all earned RBI in the frame.

The Bisons rubbed salt in the Paw in the ninth, plating the ninth and final run in the ninth. Martinez led off with a double - his 20th extra-base hit of the year. Advanced to third on an error, F-Mart would score when Robinson Cancel grounded into a double play three batters later.

Buffalo goes for a series sweep with the Red Sox Tuesday at 12:05. Brandon Knight will pitch for the Herd and Clay Buchholz for the Sox.
