Bryant, Haniger earn AFL honors

Prospects shared league lead with seven RBIs in week one
October 15, 2013

Mesa third baseman Kris Bryant (Cubs) and Surprise outfielder Mitch Haniger (Brewers) were named Arizona Fall League week one co-players of the week Tuesday. The two prospects shared the league RBI lead with seven during the first week of play.

The second overall pick in the 2013 Draft, Bryant batted .336/.390/.688 with nine homers and 32 RBIs in 36 games at three levels during the regular season. The University of San Diego product arrived at Class A Advanced Daytona in mid-August and helped the Cubs to the Florida State League title, going 7-for-20 (.350) with four RBIs in six playoff games.

Bryant picked up right where he left off as Arizona Fall League play began. The 21-year-old went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs in his debut at Glendale on Tuesday and added a homer, a single and at least two RBIs in each of his next two games. His Solar Sox club is undefeated in its first five games.

Haniger is also a first-round pick, selected 38th overall by the Brewers in 2012. The 22-year-old outfielder hit .264/.348/.431 with 11 homers, 68 RBIs and nine stolen bases in 129 games for Class A Wisconsin and Class A Advanced Brevard County in 2013, his first full season. Splitting time between center field and right, Haniger notched 15 outfield assists with the Timber Rattlers and Manatees.

Haniger opened the Fall League campaign with a grand slam and a double in his debut against Peoria on Tuesday, adding three hits and three RBIs Wednesday and going 4-for-4 with a double against Mesa on Friday. He leads all AFL hitters with 16 total bases.
