Buxton caps '13 with another accolade

After a highlight-filled season in which Byron Buxton become baseball's top prospect, the teenage phenom was named the Twins' Minor League Player of the Year on Sunday.

The 19-year-old outfielder hit .334 with 12 homers and 77 RBIs in 125 games across two levels this season. He also stole 55 bases in 74 attempts and scored 109 runs.

Buxton batted .341 with 33 extra-base hits in 68 games with Class A Cedar Rapids, where he was named Midwest League MVP, Prospect of the Year and a mid- and postseason All-Star.

Following an appearance at the Futures Game in July, Buxton -- who began the year as MLB.com's 19th-ranked prospect -- hit .326 in 57 games with Class A Advanced Fort Myers. He also overtook Miguel Sano as the top-ranked prospect in the Twins system.

Selected second overall in the 2012 Draft, Buxton will receive the Sherry Robertson Award in January at the ninth annual Diamond Awards Dinner. Before then, he will suit up for the Glendale Desert Dogs in the prospect-laden Arizona Fall League, a finishing school for the game's elite prospects.

Andrew Albers was named the Jim Rantz Award winner as the Twins' Minor League Pitcher of the Year. After going 11-5 with a 2.86 ERA and three complete games in 22 starts for Triple-A Rochester, the 27-year-old left-hander was 2-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 10 big league starts.
