Castillo Takes One For the Team

(Lansing, MI) - Leonardo Castillo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 13th inning as The Lake County Captains (39-29, 70-67) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (34-32, 81-54) by a final of 3-2. Bryson Myles knocked in two runs in the ballgame for Lake County. The Captains improve to 10-3 in extra inning ballgames on the season. With the win and the Fort Wayne loss to Bowling Green the Captains Clinched the Division Championship for the second half.

Lake County scored a run in the top of the first inning. Jose Ramires led off with a single to right field and immediately stole second base. Jordan Smith singled Ramirez to third and Bryson Myles hit a groundball to second. The Lugnuts tried to turn a double play but Bryson beat the relay throw and Ramirez scored from third to give the Captains the lead at 1-0. In the third inning it was almost an instant replay. Ramirez singled and advanced to third on a base hit by Francisco Lindor. With one out Bryson Myles hit a groundball and again beat the relay throw to first on a double play attempt. Ramirez scored and the score was 2-0 Lake County.

Lansing tied the ballgame in the sixth inning. Shane Opitz hit a high pop up to the third baseman Leonardo Catillo. Castillo miss played the pop up for an error. The next hitter Aaron Munoz singled to left field. Dalton Pompay laid down a bunt but the throw from the pitcher Mason Radeke went past first base, and one run scored. With two runners in scoring position and one out Mason Radeke was lifted from the ballgame. The first hitter Louis Head faced was K.C. Hobson. Hobson hit a sacrifice fly to right field and the ballgame was tied at 2-2.

Base umpire Ryan Additon ejected David Wallace and Bryson Myles from the ballgame. The duo was arguing calls on the bases. Jerrud Sabourin came in to left field to replace Myles in the bottom of the 11th.

RHP Mason Radeke (7-6) started the game for the Captains and did not get a decision. Mason pitched five and one third innings. Mason allowed two hits and two un-earned runs. Radeke also struck out five. Louis Head relieved Radeke and pitched two and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Head fanned four batters. Manny Carmona entered in the bottom of the ninth inning and pitched two scoreless innings. Francisco Valera (6-3) also worked two scoreless frames to get the win. Valera handed the ball over to Enosil Tejada. Tejada retired the side in the thirteenth to notch his eighth save of the season.

LHP Justin Nicolino (10-4) got the nod for the Lugnuts and also did not get a decision. Nicolino pitched five innings. Nicolino allowed six hits, two earned runs and one walk. Blake McFarland pitched two hitless innings. McFarland did not yield a run and fanned two. Shawn Griffith pitched three scoreless innings not allowing a hit and walking two. Griffith struck out one. Phil Brua (3-1) pitched three innings took the loss.

On Sunday, The Captains will remain on the road to continue the final series of the 2012 season. The Captains will send LHP Elvis Araujo (7-9, 4.92) to the mound to face the RHP Anthony DeSclafani (10-3, 3.36) for Lansing. First Pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
