Chacin struggles as Nuts fall 8-3

July 30, 2012
MODESTO, CA (July 29th, 2012) -- Colorado Rockies pitcher Jhoulys Chacin could not escape the third inning in a rehab assignment with the Nuts, giving up five runs to the Giants in the frame, and Modesto couldn't recover in an 8-3 loss to San Jose on Sunday evening.

Making his first appearance since 2008 in Modesto, Chacin cruised through the first two innings before yielding the five runs in the third on six hits, including four straight start the inning. Giants first-baseman Rickey Oropesa ended his night at an expected pitch limit of 45 with a two-run double that put San Jose ahead 5-0. Chacin (0-1) took the loss.

Giants starter Jack Snodgrass cruised through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth as Modesto pushed across their only runs of the night. Cristhian Adames led off with a triple, and later scored on a wild pitch. Snodgrass then walked Kyle Parker and Jared Clark, which resulted in the Giants going to their bullpen. Reliever Craig Whitaker come on and retired two batters before surrendering a two-out two-run double to Jayson Langfels.

Snodgrass (9-4) picked up the win, his team-leading ninth of the season, allowing three earned runs on four hits and five walks in five plus innings.

Chacin was relieved by Craig Bennigson in the third, and the lefty got the final two outs before giving way to Juan Gonzalez at the start of the fourth. Gonzalez kept San Jose off the scoreboard in four scoreless innings, allowing only two scattered hits.

San Jose pulled away from Modesto late in the game, adding two runs in the eighth against Chad Rose, and one in the ninth against Josh Mueller to take an 8-3 lead.

Giants relievers Phil McCormick, Shawn Sanford, and Jose Valdez combined to keep the Nuts off the board the rest of the game.

With the loss, Modesto came short of a sweep against San Jose, but won 2-of-3 from their North Division rival. The Nuts now head into an off day on Monday before embarking on a three-game series in Visalia starting on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. You can listen to all of the action online at ModestoNuts.com, with Alex Margulies providing the call.
