Cubs' injured Vogelbach out until August

Infielder dealing with strained oblique; Baez ready for rehab games
July 21, 2015

After eluding the injury bug for the first four seasons of his career, Dan Vogelbach was bitten twice this year.

The Cubs' No. 13 prospect has been on the disabled list since July 4 and it looks like it will take another couple weeks for his strained oblique to heal, according to Cubs director of player development Jaron Madison.

"He should be back somewhere around the beginning of August, assuming things go well," Madison told the Des Moines Register. "It's still day-to-day."

Vogelbach missed two weeks across May and June after injuring his hamstring and had been trying to get back in a groove since. In 61 games with Double-A Tennessee, the 22-year-old first baseman has hit .284/.410/.431 with 34 RBIs. A power hitter by trade, Vogelbach has left the yard just five times this season.

Amid the injuries, the Florida native has garnered two Player of the Week nods and was named to the Southern League All-Star team. Vogelbach showed off his plus-power in the game on June 24 by belting a three-run blast to put the North All-Stars on the board.

While Vogelbach awaits his return, Javiez Baez might be ready for his.

"He'll play in rehab games starting Thursday and then he'll hopefully be back [in Iowa] in a little over a week," Madison told the paper. "Hopefully -- assuming everything goes well."

The Cubs' former top prospect has been limited to 37 games this season with Triple-A Iowa after suffering a non-displaced fracture on his left ring finger on June 7.

"He's anxious to get here, obviously," Madison told the paper. "He's sick of being in Arizona, but he's in a really good place right now."
