Dickson, Lookouts break out in big way

Dodgers prospect hits two homers, plates five runs in 12-0 romp
April 21, 2014

O'Koyea Dickson and Chattanooga have gotten out of the gate slowly in the Southern League. Sunday's lopsided win could turn things around.

Dickson recorded his first two-homer game since 2011 and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Lookouts to a 12-0 rout of Jackson.

"It was a good game, moreso [for] getting the opportunity to get the win," the Dodgers first base prospect said. "We've been scuffling to get a few wins together and I just was happy to contribute.

"We were pretty loose today, having fun in the locker room, not different than we usually do. We just had a game plan for each pitcher and we had good at-bats and had fun."

Dickson, who hit 15 homers and collected 88 RBIs last season for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga, had not gone deep in 38 at-bats before sending an offering from reliever Jordan Shipers over the left-field fence in the fourth for a three-run blast. Two innings later, he connected for a two-run shot off Kyle Hunter.

"I had faced all the pitchers over the years and I look at what pitches they like to throw to me," he said. "I tried to get a good pitch to hit and I was able to get a hanging changeup that [Hunter] left up and I was able to get it over the left-field fence. It was a good night overall."

The 24-year-old California native also walked, scored three times and raised his average 18 points to .268. It was his second career two-homer game and first since July 15, 2011 with Rookie-level Ogden.

"I'm just trying to trust the process that I'm going through this season, get good pitches to hit and learn from mistakes I have made," Dickson said. "Don't try to do too much [and] have fun."

Chris O'Brien doubled, tripled, drove in two runs and scored once for the Lookouts. Leadoff man Darnell Sweeney, the Dodgers' No. 19 prospect, doubled, walked twice, stole a base and scored three times, while No. 15 prospect Scott Schebler contributed a double, triple, RBI and a run scored.

Chattanooga starter Tyson Brummett (1-1) allowed five hits and struck out five over seven innings to lower his ERA to 0.56. Pedro Baez, Los Angeles' 10th-ranked prospect, pitched two innings of one-hit relief as the Lookouts posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Jochi Ogando (0-1) made his Double-A debut for Jackson and surrendered six runs -- five earned -- on six hits and two walks while striking out five over three innings.
