Garcia earns Carolina League honors

Myrtle Beach infielder hit .342 in 25 games during June

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Myrtle Beach shortstop Leury Garcia was voted the Carolina League's Topps Player of the Month for June in a poll of the managers.

In 25 June games, the switch-hitting leadoff man batted .342 (38-for-111), with two home runs and 14 RBIs. For the month he was the league leader in runs (22), hits (38), total bases (51) and stolen bases (10).

Cumulatively for the season, the 20-year-old is batting .271 with two home runs, 33 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

Garcia was signed by the Rangers in December of 2007 out of Santiago, in the Dominican Republic. After a year in the Arizona League, he spent most of 2009 and 2010 at Class A Hickory in the South Atlantic League. Last year he batted .262 and stole 47 bases in 89 games.
