Hooks Mash Missions

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Corpus Christi snapped a nine-game losing streak and three-game scoring drought in grand fashion Tuesday night.

Right-hander Ross Seaton allowed a run and four hits over seven innings and collected one of 16 hits as the homestanding Hooks rocked San Antonio 17-3.

Seaton (2-3) recorded two strikeouts and hit two batters. He threw 89 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Every Hooks starter hit safely, led by Austin Wates and Jacob Goebbert with three knocks. Jonathan Villar and Jose Martinez had three RBIs each as the club posted a season best for runs scored.

Brandon Barnes reached base in all six plate appearances, including four walks.

San Antonio pitchers walked 10.

The Deckers - unrelated Jaff and Cody - put San Antonio ahead 1-0 in the first. Jaff opened with a single, swiped second and motored home when Cody lined a two-out single to right field.

Corpus Christi snapped a 29 2/3 innings scoreless streak while doubling up the Missions an inning later. Walks to Jon Singleton and Barnes and Andy Simunic's fielder's choice placed Singleton at third. Villar picked him up with a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line. The next hitter, Ryan McCurdy, plated Simunic with a double down the left-field line.

Finding the water just fine, the Hooks sent 13 men to bat in a seven-run third. Keyvius Sampson (2-2) took a seat after yielding a two-out, two-run single to his counterpart. Contact by Martinez (single) and Villar (ground out) produced runs, as did bases-loaded walks from Barnes and Goebbert.

Sampson was tagged for eight earned runs, walked five and struck out two. His relief, Daniel Stange, lasted just 1 1/3 and walked a pair.

Wates greeted San Antonio's third pitcher, Dustin Pease, with a triple to right-center. Goebbert's subsequent single and a two-base hit to left by Martinez upped the Hooks lead to 11-1 through five. Singleton's fourth home run and consecutive singles by Barnes, Simunic and Villar off Ryan Kelly during the seventh made it 13-1.

The Missions rallied for two in the eighth against Alex Sogard.

The Hooks then added four for the final margin, Singleton and Barnes advancing home when right fielder Cody Decker caught Simunic's bases-loaded sacrifice fly for what he thought was the third out. It was just the second, as Decker realized after he tossed the ball toward fans on the right-field berm.

The Hooks take Wednesday off before resuming the homestand vs. Frisco. Jose Cisnero (2-2) takes the mound Thursday at 7:05 vs. Barret Loux (6-0). The first 2,500 in attendance receive a J.D. Martinez Bobblehead from CPL Retail Energy.
