Injuries Cause Pitching Shake Up

Three Disabled, Miller Rejoins with Flores & Rembisz
April 26, 2010
NORTH LITTLE ROCK - The Travelers pitching staff underwent a major remaking on Monday as three pitchers were placed on the disabled list including two in the starting rotation. Missing at least their next starts are right handers Tommy Mendoza and Jeremy Thorne, while right handed reliever Ismael Carmona was also placed on the 7-day disabled list. Left hander Jayson Miller is rejoining the Travs from Rancho Cucamonga and will start Monday's series opener with the Tulsa Drillers. Joining Miller from single-A in the rotation is lefty Manuel Flores, while the Travs also receive right hander reliever Bryan Rembisz from extended spring training.

Mendoza, 22, was scheduled to throw Tuesday night against the Drillers after joining the Travs on Friday from the Angels triple-A Salt Lake affiliate. Tendonitis in his right bicep will sideline him for at least the next seven games.

Thorne, 23, (1-1, 4.41 ERA in 3 starts) strained his left glut muscle while throwing a bullpen session Sunday and he has also been placed on the 7-day DL.

Carmona, 25, (0-0, 5.06 ERA in 4 relief appearances) has a strained right quad muscle and is on the 7-day DL too.

Miller, 24, had been transferred from Arkansas to Rancho Cucamonga last Thursday and had not appeared in a game for the Quakes. In 3 previous starts with the Travs he owns an 0-3 record and 3.60 ERA.

Flores made 3 starts in the California League for Rancho Cucamonga posting a 1-2 record and 6.75 ERA. The 22-year old from Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela split the 2009 season between Cedar Rapids and Rancho Cucamonga finishing with a 9-7 record and 3.75 ERA. He is set to make his double-A debut Tuesday in a starting role against Tulsa.

Rembisz, 24, remained at the Angels minor league spring training complex in Tempe at the start of the minor league season. The minor league free agent who began his career with the independent Traverse City Beach Bums made 40 relief appearances in 2009 for the Travs compiling a record of 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA.
