Main's big night paces Jammers' rout

For years, Michael Main struggled to find success on the mound. A move 60 feet away has led to the revitalization of his career.

Main was 4-for-4 with a homer and a career-high seven RBIs as Class A Short-Season Jamestown routed Auburn, 19-2, on Monday.

Signed by the Marlins during the spring, Main fell a triple shy of the cycle in his sixth New York-Penn League contest. He was a key component in the Jammers' 13-run second inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk and scoring in his first at-bat of the frame and singling home two runs in his second. The 23-year-old outfielder doubled in a pair of runs in the third and capped his big night with a two-run homer, his first as a pro, in the fifth.

"I was just kind of just seeing the ball, trying to get a fastball and trying to hit it and stay through the middle," Main said. "I just got some good pitches to hit tonight and I was patient at the plate. That's kind of how it went for everyone.

"You just get up to bat and everyone seems to be feeding off each other. It's definitely fun, everyone is enjoying the game. It takes a little bit of the pressure off once you get rolling like that."

Main was a first-round pick of the Texas Rangers in the 2007 Draft. Then a pitcher, Main was traded to San Francisco on July 1, 2010. In five seasons on the mound, the Florida native went 16-20 with a 4.95 ERA and reached Double-A briefly in 2011, appearing in five games for Richmond. After being released in Spring Training by the Giants, Main was contacted by Miami.

"I received a call from one of the Marlins cross-checkers, Mike Cadahia, and he asked if I'd be interested in playing for them and playing in the outfield and hitting," Main said. "I was kind of inconsistent with the pitching side, so it kind of took on a new page. It started a process, and a week later, I was down in Jupiter signing with them.

"Since I've gotten to the Marlins, it's been nothing but good. The staff has been incredible with working with me. I have nothing but good things to say about the Marlins."

In six games for the Jammers, Main is batting .381 with nine RBIs. Overall, he's batting .333 with six extra-base hits and 16 RBIs in 21 Minor League games between the Gulf Coast League, the New York-Penn League and the Florida State League.

"I'm just working on having good quality at-bats every time," Main said. "Trying not to get too much in a rush and staying patient, trying to swing and hit good pitches and get my pitch, especially early in the count. If I work a deep count, I'm trying to fight and put it in play rather than striking out. For me, it's one of the most unproductive things."

Jesus Solorzano slugged a pair of homers and and drove in four runs for Jamestown. The Marlins' No. 8 prospect leads the club with five homers and 16 RBIs in 31 games.

"He has great nights like tonight where he's patient and doesn't swing out of the zone," Main said. "He crushed the balls he hit, it was a good night for him."

Brian Ellington improved to 2-0 after allowing two hits over two scoreless innings of relief for the Jammers.
