Mallett reassigned to Louisville, DeJesus sent back to Sarasota, Stewart joins Mudcats

May 20, 2009
Zebulon, NC --- The Cincinnati Reds have made a series of transactions impacting their Double-A affiliate Carolina Mudcats prior to Wednesday's homestand finale against Jacksonville.

Two Mudcats are heading two different directions as RHP Justin Mallett has been reassigned to Triple-A Louisville, with RHP Misael DeJesus heading back to Sarasota in the Florida State League. Mallett, 27, was 0-2 with a 3.68 ERA over five starts with the Mudcats and returns to the Bats, the club to which he was assigned to begin the 2009 season. DeJesus, meanwhile, won his 2009 debut against Mississippi in early April, but struggled in his next six starts. DeJesus, 24, was 1-4 with a 9.85 ERA over seven starts while walking 26 batters in 28 1/3 innings.

Joining the Mudcats today is RHP Zach Stewart from High-A Sarasota. Stewart, 22, was the Reds' third-round pick in last year's draft from Texas Tech, where he worked predominantly in relief for the Red Raiders. After 24 relief appearances last season at Dayton and Sarasota, Stewart moved into the Sarasota rotation this season, compiling a 1-1 record with an ERA of 2.13, the seventh best in the FSL, while his 42 1/3 innings ranked fourth.

Stewart, listed as the Reds' 15th best prospect by Baseball America, is slated to make his Double-A debut starting the second game of Carolina's series at Chattanooga on Friday night.

The Mudcats' roster is currently at 23, one shy of the Southern League limit.
