May Selected as E.L. Player of the Month for April

Reading Phillies starter Trevor May has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for April by members of the Eastern League media and coaching staffs. The top prospect in the Phillies organization according to Baseball America finished April with a perfect 5-0 record in as many starts and a 2.40 ERA in 30 innings of work.

The Kelso, WA native is the first member of the Reading Phillies to receive the honor since infielder Cody Overbeck won the award in April of 2011.
May led Eastern League pitchers in wins (5) and strikeouts (33) over the course of the month. He was also tied for third in WHIP (0.97), tied for fifth in innings pitched (30), and tied for seventh in batting average against (.196). With his 5-0 mark in April, May became the first Eastern League pitcher to begin the season with that record since Chris Waters of the Bowie Baysox did so during the 2008 season.

May made his Double-A debut on April 6 in Reading against the Portland Sea Dogs and surrendered four runs over five frames. After that start, it was smooth sailing for the 22-year old as he held Eastern League hitters to two earned runs or less in his four other starts of the month. Those starts were highlighted by his outing on April 25 where he held Richmond batters to just one hit over six shutout innings. He also struck out seven batters in the 1-0 Reading victory. Overall, May struck out at least six in each of his starts during April.

Following his standout season with the Clearwater Threshers (A+) in 2011, May was the recipient of the Paul Owens Award as the best pitcher in the Phillies minor league system. He went 10-8 with a Florida State League-leading 208 strikeouts and a 3.63 ERA in 27 starts. His 208 strikeouts were the most by a Phillies minor league pitcher since at least 1980 (as far back as individual Phillies farm system records go).

May makes his next start on the road against the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday, May 11. His next scheduled home start at FirstEnergy Stadium will be Wednesday, May 16 at 11:35 p.m. when Reading concludes its three-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs.
