Maybin lofts Mudcats to Game 1 win

Center fielder's three-run shot gives Carolina early edge on West Tenn

Cameron Maybin cranked a three-run homer and Scott Cousins added a solo shot as Carolina rolled over West Tenn, 7-1, in the opener of their best-of-5 Southern League playoff series Wednesday.

Maybin, who amassed 13 homers during the regular season, went deep in the third inning as the Mudcats raced to a 4-0 lead. Cousins, who went 2-for-3 and scored twice, homered in the sixth.

Southern League Most Valuable Player Gaby Sanchez singled twice and scored three times and Chris De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Carolina starter William Glen (1-0) allowed one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking four over five innings.

Diamond Jaxx starter Joe Woerman (0-1) gave up five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and four walks while striking out four over six innings.

Johan Limonta hit an RBI double in the fifth for West Tenn.
