Mets hurlers lead Scorpions to win

A trio of Mets pitching prospects led Scottsdale past Peoria for the second straight day in a 4-0 win Tuesday afternoon.

Hansel Robles, Cody Satterwhite and Jeurys Familia combined to toss five strong frames in the shutout. Robles, the Scorpions starter, gave up two hits and a walk while fanning four over three innings before Satterwhite and Familia both pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout. Four more relievers closed out the win by throwing one inning apiece.

"The key to our pitching today was they got ahead early," said No. 2 Yankees prospect Mason Williams, the starting center fielder and leadoff hitter Tuesday. "They started batters off early with strikes. The confidence of our pitchers is great."

Satterwhite, a 26-year-old right-hander originally selected by the Tigers in the second round of the 2008 Draft, improved to 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA in nine Fall League outings. He went 2-2 for Class A Advanced St. Lucie during the regular season, making 16 relief appearances covering 22 2/3 innings.

The two clubs combined for just eight hits, with Scottsdale scoring all four of its runs on a single and five walks in the fourth inning.

Coming on in relief of Javelinas starter Johnny Barbato (Padres), Royals southpaw prospect Noel Arguelles walked the first three batters he faced before retiring Peter O'Brien (Yankees) on a sacrifice fly and Aderlin Rodriguez (Mets) on a groundout. He issued two more walks, the latter with the bases loaded, before giving way to Ken Giles (Phillies), who surrendered a run-scoring walk and a single before retiring Cory Vaughn (Mets) for the final out.

"That's to our advantage. We went up there to be patient and we executed," said Williams, who drew the last of the six fourth-inning walks.

Arguelles (0-1) was charged with all four runs and threw just 12 of his 34 pitches for strikes. In seven AFL appearances, the 23-year-old has allowed nine runs on seven hits and 13 walks while striking out three over 8 1/3 innings.

Catcher Austin Hedges (Padres) doubled and singled for the Javelinas. Four different hitters had a single apiece for the Scorpions, who have won two in a row after dropping their previous eight games.

"We're still coming out here trying to play hard," said Williams, who was 1-for-3 with the aforementioned run-scoring walk. "We've been fortunate to get a few wins."
