Muckdogs capture Pinckney crown

Brilliant relief by Gorgen helps Batavia wrap up division title
September 7, 2008
They had to wait until the final day of the regular season, but the Batavia Muckdogs can finally call themselves Pinckney Division champions.

Scott Gorgen pitched five innings of scoreless relief and Edwin Gomez ripped a two-run double Saturday as the Muckdogs clinched the division crown with a 4-1 victory over the State College Spikes at Dwyer Stadium.

Gomez's only hit in three at-bats staked Batavia to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but starter Miguel Tapia gave up back-to-back singles to Adenson Chourio and Ciro Rosero to start the third.

Quincy Latimore struck out and Kyle Morgan grounded into a forceout before Tapia uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Chourio to score. Andrew Biela followed with a single to center field, but Frederick Parejo nailed Morgan at the plate to preserve the Muckdogs' 2-1 lead.

Gorgen (5-2), who had started in eight of his 14 appearances this year, protected the slim advantage by yielding three hits and a walk with five strikeouts before Adam Reifer tossed a perfect ninth for his 22nd save.

Jose Garcia singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Christian Rosa came home on a throwing error by Spikes catcher Jose Peley in the eighth for Batavia (46-28), which held off hard-charging Jamestown (47-29) by winning its final two games.

The Jammers will have to settle for the New York-Penn League's Wild Card spot as they used a season-ending five-game winning streak to edge Brooklyn.

State College starter Gabriel Alvarado (0-1) pitched 1 1/3 frames and surrendered two runs -- one earned -- on three hits and a walk.

Mark Carver went 2-for-4 with a double for the last-place Spikes (18-56).
