Peterson homers in second straight game

It took first-rounder D.J. Peterson a couple days to adjust to Double-A, but now he's giving Jackson fans a little glimpse of the laser show he treated Cal League spectators to on a nightly basis.

Seattle's top position prospect smacked a three-run homer -- his 20th overall long ball of the season -- and scored twice to lead the Generals to an 8-5 win over the Huntsville Stars on Sunday. It was Peterson's second homer in as many days after he went yard against the Stars on Saturday.

The 12th overall pick in the 2013 Draft singled and scored in the eighth inning and added a three-run homer to left-center field over the 380-foot fence in the ninth.

Since his callup, Peterson has hit safely in 10 of 11 games, including multi-hit performances in each of his past three. He sports a .283 average with two homers, two doubles and six RBIs at the new level. He had only two extra-base hits and one RBI through his first nine games entering the current road trip, but he turned that around by going 6-for-14 against the Brewers affiliate.

The Arizona native hit .326 with 18 homers and 73 RBIs in 65 games for Class A Advanced High Desert before his promotion two weeks ago. Ranked 70th overall among MLB.com's Top 100 prospects, he also hit 23 doubles, drew 23 walks and stole six bases in as many attempts.

The 6-foot-1 right-handed hitter was originally selected by the Mariners in the 33rd round of the 2010 Draft, but did not sign. He was drafted again last year out of the University of New Mexico by Seattle.

Peterson still leads the California League in RBIs and is tied for second in long balls with Stockton's Renato Nunez behind the Ports' Matt Olson, who has 24.

The 22-year-old third baseman batted .303 with 13 homers and 47 RBIs in 55 games across two levels between Class A Clinton and short-season Everett in his rookie year.

On Sunday, Jackson's Daniel Paolini went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, three RBIs and a run scored and starter Victor Sanchez (4-4) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters over seven innings.

Huntsville's Robinzon Diaz and Shea Vucinich plated two runs apiece in the losing effort. Drew Gagnon (5-4) surrendered three runs -- two earned -- on a hit and two walks over two innings.
