Puig homers in return from disabled list

Back in the lineup after a two-week spell on the disabled list, the Dodgers' top prospect made headlines for all the right reasons Monday.

Just 24 hours after being stopped for speeding, reckless driving and driving without proof of insurance, Yasiel Puig delivered a solo homer and a walk-off single in Double-A Chattanooga's 3-2 win over Jackson in the opener of a doubleheader.

After striking out on five pitches in the first inning and grounding out on the second pitch he saw to lead off the third, MLB.com's No. 75 prospect hammered Chance Ruffin's 1-1 offering over the center-field fence to lead off the fifth.

The outfielder -- who had been sidelined since April 18 with a strained left thumb -- struck out swinging to end the sixth and he grounded out for the second out of the ninth, but came through in the clutch with a game-winning knock when the game went to extra innings.

Joc Pederson singled to right field to lead off the bottom of the 11th and Casio Grider bunted him over to second base. Forrest Snow uncorked a wild pitch that advanced both runners and -- on a 2-1 pitch -- Puig won the game with an opposite-field line drive.

The 22-year-old Cuban defector was signed by the Dodgers to a seven-year contract last summer. He is batting .333 with eight extra-base hits and 11 RBIs in 14 Southern League games.

Chattanooga's Luis Vasquez (1-0) earned the win after working around a hit and a walk in a scoreless 11th. Starter Rob Rasmussen went six innings, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and a walk while striking out four batters.

Snow fell to 1-4 in the loss for the Generals. He gave up one run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning.

In the second game of the twinbill, Jackson rallied for a run in the sixth and seventh innings to win, 5-4.

Abraham Almonte -- who hit for the cycle Saturday -- went 2-for-2 with three walks, two RBIs and a run scored and right fielder James Jones was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Lookouts center fielder Pederson hit his sixth homer in the losing effort, in which Puig did not play.
