Round Rock Defeats Chihuahuas 6-4 In Finale

Express Returns to Dell Diamond Tuesday to Begin Eight-Game Homestand
June 17, 2014

El Paso, Texas - The Round Rock Express (34-37) finished out their 12-game road trip with a win in El Paso on Monday night, using a collective effort to defeat the Chihuahuas (33-39) 6-4 at Southwest University Park.

On Tuesday, the E-Train will steam home to Round Rock to begin an eight-game homestand having won seven of their last eight games.

Round Rock scored on a wild pitch in the second to take a one-run lead before widening the gap to 5-0 in the third. SS Josh Wilson and LF Ryan Strausborger led off the second with back-to-back singles and moved up a base on a productive Carlos Arroyo groundout. With 2B Kensuke Tanaka batting, Chihuahua starter Billy Buckner (4-3, 4.84 ERA) uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Wilson to scamper home with the game's first run.

In the third, C Brett Nicholas got things going with a one-out double. After a walk was issued to Wilson, Strausborger lined a base hit back up the middle to plate Nicholas. Arroyo followed with an RBI single, the first of his Triple-A career, to deliver Wilson. Tanaka then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Strausborger, who had advanced to third on Arroyo's base knock. 3B Adam Rosales finished off the four-run frame by ripping an RBI double to right.

El Paso responded with two runs in the home half of the third to cut into Round Rock's lead. LF Alex Castellanos homered with one out in the inning to put the Chihuahuas on the board and RF Jeff Francoeur drove in another run to make it 5-2.

The Chihuahuas took advantage of an E-Train error in the fourth to trim their deficit to 5-3. CF Rico Noel extended the inning with a two-out double then scored when right fielder Arroyo misplayed a ball off the bat of Castellanos.

Noel pulled El Paso to within one in the sixth, driving home DH Cody Decker with a one-out single, but Round Rock added another run in the seventh to push their lead back out to two. CF Jared Hoying, who was named PCL Player of the Week earlier in the day, led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a one-out single by Wilson to bring the final score to 6-4.

Express starter LHP Ryan Feierabend (7-5, 4.25 ERA) gave way to the bullpen in the sixth, but did enough to earn his team-best seventh win of the season. Feierabend allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over 5.1 innings, while striking out four and walking two.

Relievers Nate Adcock and Matt West held the Chihuahuas scoreless for 2.2 innings in relief of Feierabend before RHP Neftali Feliz slammed the door in the ninth to pick up his second save.

Both Strausborger and Wilson reached base three times Monday to lead the E-Train offensively. Strausborger finished 3-5 with an RBI and a run, while Wilson went 2-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

The Express will begin a four-game series with the Sacramento River Cats (41-30) Tuesday to kick off their eight-game homestand at Dell Diamond. RHP Daniel McCutchen (1-5, 7.66 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the E-Train against Sacramento's RHP Arnold Leon (6-2, 5.35 ERA). Bring more friends and family out to the ballpark to take advantage of half-price tickets, presented by A+ Federal Credit Union. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
