Oklahoma City, Okla. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (78-65) used fantastic pitching to end the 2012 season on a high note by beating the Round Rock Express (69-75) 1-0 in front of 4,303 on Monday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
After being eliminated from playoff contention last night, Oklahoma City used four pitchers to complete its second shutout in the last six games, and fifth shutout of the year. The game lasted 2 hours and 2 minutes, making it the shortest game of the year for the RedHawks.
Lefthander Dallas Keuchel started for the RedHawks. Keuchel went only three innings, but he was very effective during his time on the hill. Keuchel retired all nine batters he faced, eight on groundouts.
Sergio Perez replaced Keuchel in the top of the fourth, and gave up a leadoff walk to Julio Borbon. Perez was able to work out of the potential trouble by getting Luis Hernandez to ground into a double play. Perez went on to pitch two scoreless innings, giving up just that leadoff walk in the fourth.
Aneury Rodriguez (4-7) relieved Perez to start the sixth and with one out, Robinzon Diaz hit a double off the center field wall for the first hit of the game for the Express. Rodriguez got a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat.
The RedHawks were able to break through in the bottom of the sixth. J.B. Shuck reached first on an infield single to third and Brad Snyder brought Shuck home on a double down the left field line to give Oklahoma City a 1-0 lead.
Round Rock starter Chad Bell (5-5) pitched well, despite receiving the loss. Bell went six innings, giving up one run on five hits while striking out seven.
Round Rock threatened again in the top of the eighth as Alberto Gonzalez hit a one-out single to left field. Gonzalez advanced to second on a wild pitch by Rodriguez. Rodriguez was able to work out of it by inducing back-to-back pop ups.
Chuckie Fick picked up his third save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The RedHawks finished the season 78-65, the best for a non-playoff team in franchise history. The 2013 season opener is Thursday, April 4th at Memphis. The RedHawks home opener is Friday, April 12th against Memphis.
