Season heating up for potential top draft picks

This week's Draft Report goes all over the country, from the Pacific Northwest to the South Atlantic states, to bring you another six pack of 2007 draft capsules.

It's another mix of high schoolers, college players, pitchers and hitters in this week's half dozen. Read on for information on two intriguing prep right-handers, a lefty college closer, a two-way star we'll profile as a first baseman as well as those always hot commodities -- a college middle infielder and a college catcher.

In the next couple of weeks, things should really start heating up with high school action in the Northeast kicking into gear very soon. Some of the top high school arms in the country have been waiting for things to warm up a bit in places like New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts. So stay tuned for reports on those guys in the coming weeks.

In other draft-related news. ... It seems more and more likely that, barring some unforeseen catastrophe, Vandy's David Price will be the No. 1 overall pick this year. At least that's what the industry consensus is, and considering he's 5-0 with a 2.88 ERA and 89 K's in 59 1/3 IP, he's done nothing to diminish his status. ... RHP Andrew Brackman may have righted the ship last weekend. Now pitching on Saturdays, the NC State hurler went seven innings, allowing one run and striking out seven. ... Could Rice LHP Joe Savery be re-entering the top of the first round picture? Following offseason shoulder surgery, Savery had been slow to come back to form, leaving scouts discouraged. But he pitched well in his last start. Still pitching on Sundays, Savery went seven innings against Marshall, allowing three unearned runs, five hits and no walks while striking out seven.

Tim Alderson, RHP, Horizon HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.: Scouts have been on Alderson all year and he certainly didn't hurt himself when he struck out 13 and walked just one -- the first free pass he's allowed all season -- against Nevada powerhouse Biship Gorman. Complete Report.

Brett Cecil, LHP, University of Maryland: A lefty college closer, Cecil has been a little hot and cold this year, but brings a serious out pitch to the table each time he takes the mound. Complete Report.

Zack Cozart, SS, University of Mississippi: The Ole Miss infielder went 4-for-11 in a weekend series against Auburn, but there are questions whether he'll be an everyday shortstop at the next level. Complete Report.

Josh Donaldson, C, Auburn: Donaldson really put himself on the map with a standout Cape League performance last summer, but some feel he profiles as just a backup backstop down the road. Still, catchers are always in high demand. Complete Report.

Sean Doolittle, 1B, University of Virginia: A two-way player some like as a lefty pitcher, this week's report takes a look at his exploits at the plate from a recent matchup against Miami. Complete Report.

Julian Sampson, RHP, Skyline HS, Sammamish, Wash.: Sampson was good against Issaquah HS, tossing a four-hit shutout and striking out six with an easy delivery that pumps 92 mph fastballs for strikes. Complete Report.
