Spinners Celebrate 50 Years of Bubble Wrap with Record Attempt

Team to attempt record for popping Bubble Wrap simultaneously during July 17 game
July 15, 2010
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are looking to make history as the team celebrates the 50th birthday of Bubble Wrap with a world record attempt for most people popping Bubble Wrap simultaneously during their July 17 game against the Aberdeen Ironbirds.

The Spinners, who previously set the Guinness Book of World Records record for largest game of "Duck, Duck, Goose" following their August 14, 2004 game, will again attempt a record that has never before been set: every fan, staff member, even the players, will receive a one-foot-by-one-foot piece of Bubble Wrap as they enter the park to be popped simultaneously during the middle of the third inning.

"Bubble Wrap is one of the most addicting unnoticed nuances in life," said Spinners Vice President of Communications Jon Goode. "We just hope that fans will be able to resist the urge to pop the Bubble Wrap before the record attempt."

The world record attempt is just part of the day's celebrations for Bubble Wrap which also include a kid's Bubble Wrap dance off and all fans who've celebrated their 50th birthday within the past year will be invited onto the Bubble Wrap dance floor to dance to 50-Cent to celebrate the 50 years of the packing product.

"Spinners interns are hard at work cutting Bubble Wrap squares for this momentous occasion," said Goode. "Three days of Bubble Wrap cutting for one minute of history!"

With 50 being the number for the day, the Spinners will award the 50th fan to enter the park an opportunity that really "pops."

"If the 50th out of the game is recorded on a pop-up, the 50th fan through the gates will receive a year supply of popcorn."

Originally intended to be a new form of wallpaper, Bubble Wrap became a packing staple and became even more popular amongst people for the noise it creates when popped.

Tickets are still available for fan's looking to be a part of this historic day by calling the Spinners Box Office at 978-459-1702 or visiting www.lowellspinners.com.
