Stauffer excels in rehab for Storm

Stauffer gave up three hits and struck out five over seven innings in what was likely his final rehab appearance as Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore lost to High Desert, 6-5.

After allowing a pair of two-out first-inning singles, Stauffer rebounded to retire 17 straight. The veteran right-hander faced three over the minimum and recorded eight of his 21 outs via the groundout.

Stauffer has been on the disabled list since April 5 for the Padres with a strained right elbow. This is his third rehab outing, second with Lake Elsinore. In his previous appearance for the Storm, the 2003 first-round pick gave up two runs over 3 2/3 innings.

Stauffer is expected to rejoin San Diego next week. The Maine native was 9-12 with a 3.73 ERA in 31 starts for the Padres in 2011 and was second on the club with 128 strikeouts. Over his six-year career, Stauffer is 21-31 with a 3.91 ERA.

All-Star Carlos Quentin, also rehabbing for San Diego, was 0-for-3 with an RBI. Cory Spangenberg, the Padres' No. 5 prospect, was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Steven Proscia had three hits, including a bases-clearing double in the eighth inning for the Mavericks. Patrick Brady hit a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth inning as High Desert rallied from a 5-0 deficit, scoring six times in the final two innings.
