Weaver shakes 66ers in rehab with Quakes

After Wednesday's dominating tuneup with Rancho Cucamonga, it might not be long before Jered Weaver makes his big-league return.

Weaver (1-0), who is recovering from biceps tendinitis, scattered three hits and two walks while striking out seven in seven scoreless innings as the Quakes posted a 2-1 win over the Inland Empire 66ers.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim lanky right-hander allowed a leadoff single to Rafael Furcal and a second-inning triple to Ryan Rogowski. After that, he retired the next 11 straight batters before walking Furcal in the sixth.

After giving up a double to Blake Dewitt, Weaver struck out Lucas May to strand Furcal at third. Behind the outing, Weaver may be ready to start April 16 against the Boston Red Sox. If not, he most likely will make another rehab start at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Weaver made his first rehab start for the Quakes on April 6. He threw 77 pitches -- 47 for strikes, allowing one run -- a home run -- on two hits with five strikeouts in four innings. As a rookie last season, he won his first nine decisions and finished 11-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 19 starts.

The Quakes (6-1) got one run in the first on Dallas Morris' RBI single and another in the seventh on Patrick Reilly's first home run of the season. Morris and Reilly both went 2-for-3.

The 66ers (3-4), losers of three in a row, plated a run in the ninth on Jamie Hoffmann's pinch-hit sacrifice fly.

Furcal, who is on rehab from a strained left ankle, went 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. The 29-year-old shortstop went 0-for-4 against Bartolo Colon in his first rehab game Tuesday and is expected to make his season debut with the Los Angles Dodgers on Friday.

Rancho Cucamonga's Darren O'Day came in with two outs in the ninth and got David Nicholson to ground out for his fourth save.

Inland Empire starter Jesus Castillo (0-2) couldn't match Weaver's night, but turned in a solid outing. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out six in six frames.
