Whitecaps' Green bests college teammate

Last summer, Chad Green and Dace Kime were part of the same University of Louisville rotation that helped the Cardinals to a Big East title. 

But in the Midwest League on Monday, they were opponents. Green was drafted by the Tigers in the 11th round of the '13 Draft, and Kime by the Indians in the third round.

"It's always fun going up against a guy you played with for three years," Green said. "We talked a little about it before. We always knew that there would be a chance. It was pretty cool to watch him throw and compete against him."

Green and Class A West Michigan topped Kime and Lake County, 5-4. The victor allowed two runs on a hit and two walks while fanning seven over seven innings. He recorded 15 consecutive outs to finish his outing, and the win made him 5-4 with a 3.47 ERA.

There were clearly no hard feelings between the right-handers. 

"We talked and we went out to eat after the game," Green said. "Every time we have the chance to do that, we do, either get dinner or just hang out after."

But when the bill arrived, the pals went Dutch. 

"We've both had our ups and downs this year, so we're not going to have the winner pay or the loser pay or anything like that," Green said. "We just pay for our own."

Green's only trouble came in the second inning, when he sandwiched a double to Eric Haase between walks to Nellie Rodriguez and Paul Hendrix to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to Indians' 13th-ranked prospect Dorsyss Paulino plated Rodriguez, and Hendrix scored on a groundout by Torsten Boss.

"I didn't really have a feel for any of my pitches in that second inning. I lost it a little bit, and I guess that can happen sometimes," said the 23-year-old native of Greenville, South Carolina.

Green whiffed Grant Fink to end the frame.

"I just tried to focus and throw quality strikes," he said. "Going in with the bases loaded and nobody out, you always try to minimize it and limit the damage. And getting out with two runs, that could've been a lot worse from the way it sounds."

Green followed with four perfect innings, striking out two apiece in the third, fifth and sixth frames.

"It was good. I think one of the adjustments was throwing the breaking ball for strikes. [In the second], I lost it a little bit," he said. "I tried to make good pitches, throw quality strikes the whole time."

The Whitecaps' Ralph Rhymes smacked a three-run double in the second and No. 9 Tigers prospect Domingo Leyba went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Kime was tagged with four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out a pair for the Captains. He fell to 6-13 with a 5.14 ERA.

Second-ranked Indians prospect Clint Frazier singled in a run in the loss.
