Wood ties AFL home run mark
Wood's two-run shot in the fifth inning put the Scorpions ahead for good. It was the 20-year-old shortstop's 12th homer, tying him with Tagg Bozied for the AFL mark.
The historic long ball was one of five hit by Surprise. Charlton Jimerson (Astros) and Corey Smith (Padres) contributed two-run shots in the third inning, Billy Butler (Royals) hit a three-run blast in the seventh and Howie Kendrick (Angels) went yard in the eighth.
The beneficiary of the Scorpions' onslaught was Angels prospect Jered Weaver (1-3), who recorded his first AFL win. The 2004 first-round draft pick allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings while striking out five. Chris Demaria (Royals), Philip Barzilla (Astros) and Travis Minix (Phillies) combined for four scoreless frames.
Pedro Lopez (White Sox) put the Saguaros on the board with an RBI single in the first inning. It was his first AFL at-bat after replacing Robert Valido on the Peoria roster. Brad Eldred (Pirates) smacked a two-run double in the third and scored two batters later on a single by Josh Fields (Marlins).
Pirates farmhand Shane Youman (1-1) took the loss in relief after yielding Wood's tie-breaking homer. Starter Landon Jacobsen lasted 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks. None of the Saguaros' five hurlers escaped without allowing at least one run.
The Scorpions won for just the third time in 12 games to improve to 13-13, while the Saguaros dropped to 7-19.
