BayBears out-hit Biscuits but fall in series opener

Multi-hit game for Jones, Gatto tosses three scoreless out of 'pen

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 1, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, broke up a shutout bid with an eighth-inning run but dropped the series opener 3-1 to the Montgomery Biscuits Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.


The BayBears (11-14) out-hit Montgomery 7-6 and were led by Jahmai Jones , who recorded his first multi-hit game of the season. Jones is now 7-for-21 in six games against the Biscuits (16-9) this season. Roberto Baldoquin also had a two-hit game after hitting a walk-off homer Monday, and he scored the lone run on a Brandon Sandoval sacrifice fly in the eighth.


Josh Fleming (3-1) tossed seven scoreless frames for the Biscuits before allowing the run in the eighth. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a walk in a season-high eight innings pitched. Fleming has recorded quality starts in all five of his outings. Phoenix Sanders retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his second save.


Jesus Castillo (0-4) threw 84 pitches and left the game after four innings, despite only allowing one run on three hits. Montgomery had a runner on third base in the first and third and the bases loaded in the second, but Castillo limited the damage.


Kaleb Cowart made his second professional pitching appearance and gave up two runs on two hits with one strikeout in the bottom of the fifth. Joe Gatto finished the game with three scoreless innings, and he has surrendered just one earned run in 15 2/3 innings of relief.


The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Montgomery Thursday at 10:35 a.m. Right-handed pitcher Matt Ball (0-1, 3.71 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Ricardo Pinto (2-1, 4.82 ERA) for the Braves.
