MOBILE, Ala. (April 8, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, won both games of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After grabbing a 1-0 lead through three innings, the BayBears plated eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach for a 9-0 shutout win.
Hutton Moyer scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch, and Zach Gibbons followed with an RBI single. Matt Thaiss broke the game open with a three-run double and scored on a Taylor Ward double. Moyer capped off the inning with a two-run homer to right field, his second of the series. Trailing 2-0 early, Brendon Sanger and Ward both hit RBI doubles to tie the game. Wade Wass plated a pair of runs with his first hit of the year, a single to center field that put Mobile (3-1) in front for good.
Pensacola pulled within one in the fifth, courtesy of Shed Long's second double of the game. However, Greg Mahle (1-0) and Jake Jewell combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings to preserve the lead. Mahle got the BayBears out of a jam by inducing an inning-end double play and then working around a pair of singles in the sixth. Jewell retired the side in order in the final frame with two strikeouts for his first save since May 26, 2015.
Ward recorded his fourth straight multi-game and is now 9-for-15 to start the season.
