Boyd Named Pitcher of the Week

Lefty didn't allow earned run over 12 innings v. New Britain, Binghamton
May 18, 2015

MANCHESTER, N.H. - In conjunction with the Eastern League, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats announced that left-handed pitcher Matt Boyd has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week today. The honor comes after Boyd hurled seven scoreless innings against Binghamton on Sunday afternoon, and after a five-inning appearance against the New Britain Rock Cats last Tuesday.

Boyd's strong outing included four strikeouts, while he surrendered only seven hits over seven scoreless innings. He picked up the win after being engulfed in a pitcher's duel against Binghamton's starter, Seth Lugo. The Fisher Cats secured a 5-0 victory over the Mets and split the series with Binghamton. Boyd walked a single batter and lowered his ERA to 1.02 for the season. All of the runs the Fisher Cats scored came as they batted around for a five-run eighth inning.

During Boyd's outing while facing the Rock Cats, he surrendered a single run while going five frames. Boyd struck out seven Rock Cats and held New Britain to four hits in a no-decision. The Fisher Cats lost by a final score of 2-1.

Arguably the Fisher Cats most consistent starter this season, Boyd has compiled a 3-1 record in 44.1 innings of play during his second season in Double-A. Boyd leads the league with a 1.02 ERA and 48 strikeouts in eight starts this season. He's limited opposing batters to only 27 hits and has only allowed five runs all season. Boyd also ranks third in WHIP in the Eastern League at 0.88

Boyd is the first Fisher Cat to be awarded a weekly award in 2015, and the first pitcher to win since Mike Lee was named pitcher of the week ending August 24, 2014.
