All-Star Game boasts Big Apple bushel

Yanks, Cyclones sending 13 to New York-Penn League bash
August 7, 2010
Staten Island Yankees fans will see plenty of their favorite players as well as some of their least favorite players at the New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

The rosters for the midsummer classic have been released and the Yankees will have six representatives on the American League affiliates squad for the Aug. 17 showdown at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Only the rival Brooklyn Cyclones, with eight, boast more All-Stars.

Pitchers Michael O'Brien, Preston Claiborne and Chase Whitley account for 60 percent of the Staten Island selections. Shortstop Jose Mojica and outfielder Eduardo Sosa are the Yankees' other representatives.

Darrell Ceciliani, who leads the league in hits (74), batting average (.387) and runs scored (44), combines with RBI leader Cory Vaughn to headline the group from Brooklyn.

Marcell Ozuna, who's tied with Vaughn for the league lead with 12 homers, is one of two Jamestown Jammers named to the National League affiliates team. Jose Garcia and Felix Sanchez are the representative of the Lowell Spinners, and the Tri-City ValleyCats are sending second baseman Ben Orloff and third baseman Tyler Burnett.

Hudson Valley Renegades shortstop Derek Dietrich was selected to the AL squad, but he'll likely miss the game due to an injury.

Williamsport Crosscutters right-hander Eric Pettis is 6-0 with a league-best 1.30 ERA. He and Brooklyn's Angel Cuan, who's 5-0 with a 1.66 ERA a league-leading 48 strikeouts, make for an intimidating N.L. pitching tandem.

The A.L. affiliates can counter with Casey Lawrence and Andrew Hutchison of the Auburn Doubledays, who lead the circuit with 404 strikeouts.

Brooklyn's first-year skipper, Wally Backman, will manage the N.L. team and will be opposed by Staten Island's Josh Paul.
