Franklin has first career five-hit game

M's prospect continues up-and-down season in Cal League
May 26, 2011
The roller-coaster ride that's been Nick Franklin's first season in the California League reached a high point Wednesday night.

The former first-round pick recorded his first career five-hit game, drove in three runs and scored twice as the High Desert Mavericks pulled out a 9-7, 11-inning victory over the Modesto Nuts.

Franklin singled in each of his first two at-bats, plating Daniel Carroll in the third inning to give the Mavericks a 2-0 cushion. After grounding out in the fifth, he launched a two-run homer in the seventh to extend the lead to a seemingly comfortable 5-0.

The homer was the fourth of the season and second in three games for MLB.com's preseason No. 38 prospect.

Modesto rallied in the ninth to force extra innings, with pinch-hitter Dallas Tarleton's two-run double forging a 5-5 tie.

Franklin collected his third base hit in the bottom of the ninth, then -- after the Nuts scored twice in the top half -- singled again in the 11th ahead of Dennis Raben's walk-off grand slam.

The 20-year-old shortstop is 9-for-19 with six runs scored and four RBIs over his last four games to get his average back to .272. He was hitless in his first 12 at-bats this season, but was batting .306 on April 21 before struggling through a 9-for-57 funk.

The 2010 Midwest League midseason and postseason All-Star responded by going 10-for-23 during a five-game hitting streak that preceded a 1-for-14 slump.
