Ballet receives grant from Braves

'All About Kids' themed grant will help support dance project
October 6, 2011
The Gwinnett Braves announced today that Gwinnett Ballet Theatre is the recipient of the Gwinnett Braves September 2011 grant. The $1,000 grant will help cover dance clothing, shoes and transportation for students of the Shiloh Dance Project as well as the instructor's salary.

Gwinnett Ballet Theatre has partnered with Shiloh Elementary School for the past five years, offering free dance education year-round for children who would not otherwise be able to study. The Shiloh Dance Project has affected the lives of hundreds of elementary school children since 2006, giving many of them opportunities to learn and perform that would have been out of their reach economically if not for this program. These young students are offered dance instructions weekly, with clothing and shoes provided, as well as the chance to see annual productions by the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre free of charge.

The purpose in developing and continuing the Shiloh Dance Project is a response to the needs of a changing community. Goals and objectives of the program include educating the children in dance, music and physical fitness. This instills self confidence and better health, but also affords a further opportunity to those who are interested.

"Gwinnett Ballet Theatre is very excited to welcome the Gwinnett Braves as one of our valued community partners," said marketing director Holley Calmes. "I know we will make a difference in the lives of many young fans of both baseball and ballet."

GBT will be producing the 30th anniversary celebration of The Nutcracker at Gwinnett Performing Arts Center from Dec. 2-18. The series finale will include a special performance by Gwinnett Braves general manager North Johnson.
