Tribe's Sheffield arrested in alleged break-in

Indians 2014 first-rounder Justus Sheffield is facing charges of aggravated burglary and underage drinking after an arrest early Monday in his hometown of Tullahoma, Tennessee, according to The Tullahoma News.

The 18-year-old -- ranked seventh in Cleveland's farm system -- was arrested along with two former teammates from the Tullahoma High School baseball team around 4:30 a.m. Monday after allegedly breaking into a residence.

According to the News, Sheffield told police he was attempting to "discuss some issues with Brody Thomasson," who lives at the residence. Police said Sheffield had a "strong odor of intoxicating beverage on his person and admitted to having a few drinks of alcohol."

The Indians issued the following statement on Tuesday:

"The organization is aware of the report involving Justus Sheffield. We have spoken with Justus about the incident and are in the process of gathering additional information. Beyond that, we will not comment further until the legal process is completed."

Sheffield was released by police after posting a $5,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court on Feb. 5.

The left-handed pitcher was the 31st player selected in the 2014 Draft, signing for a reported $1.6 million after earning Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year honors while at Tullahoma High School. The southpaw had a 4.79 ERA in eight appearances (four starts) with the Indians' Rookie-level Arizona League affiliate last summer.
