Phillies' Nola promoted to Triple-A

2014 seventh overall pick takes next step toward Major Leagues
June 14, 2015

It took less than two months for Aaron Nola to reach Double-A last season. Now the Phillies' No. 2 prospect is making another step on his fast track to the Majors.

MLB.com's 32nd overall prospect was promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday from Double-A Reading, becoming the club's second top prospect to earn a promotion in the opening months of the 2015 season. His first start with the IronPigs has not yet been announced.

The 2014 first-round pick climbed to Reading after only seven appearances, including six starts, with Class A Advanced Clearwater last year. Over two seasons, the 22-year-old sported a 9-3 record with a 2.06 ERA and 74 strikeouts over 100 2/3 innings in 17 appearances for the Fightin Phils.

Philadelphia has a history of drafting raw high-upside prospects, but Nola was considered the most Major League-ready pitcher in his Draft class.

Though the former LSU star does not have overpowering stuff -- his fastball runs in the low-90s -- he makes up for it with stellar command of his fastball, changeup and slider. On MLB.com's 20-to-80 scale, Nola graded at 60 for his fastball, changeup and control. Though his slider lags behind the other two with a rating of 50, MLB.com's scouting report said the pitch has improved.

So far this season, Nola is 7-3 with a 1.88 ERA in 12 starts spanning 76 2/3 innings. He has struck out 59 and walked nine.
