JetHawks clinch playoff berth with win

Victory places Lancaster in playoffs for fourth straight season

LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks overcame an early two-run deficit and tied a season-best mark with 19 hits in a 16-4 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm to clinch a playoff berth on Friday night at The Hangar.

Alex Bregman went 4-for-6 at the plate to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. J.D. Davis and Chase McDonald both homered for the JetHawks (70-61), who clinched a California League playoff berth with the victory.

Christian Powell (2-2) earned his second win for Lancaster, holding the Storm (47-84) to three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked just two.

Nick Torres led off the top of the second inning with a solo homer to left field. Chase Jensen added a RBI-single for a 2-0 Lake Elsinore lead, but the JetHawks took the lead in the bottom half on a five-run rally against starter Matt Shepherd. Davis led off with a homer, and Ronnie Mitchell tripled and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. McDonald walked and scored the go-ahead run on a triple by Jamie Ritchie, and the latter scored on a balk by Shepherd. Bregman capped the rally with a run-scoring triple, the third triple of the inning.

In the third, McDonald hit a sacrifice fly to plate Davis from third, and Mitchell scored on an error. Sean McMullen hit a RBI-double and James Ramsay singled home another run to extend the JetHawks' lead to 9-2.

The Storm managed one run in the fourth inning, but Lancaster added three more in the bottom of the fifth, as Mott Hyde scored on an error and Derek Fisher hit a two-run triple. The JetHawks would score four more runs off Ricardo Valenzuela in the eighth inning, as McDonald led off with a home run, Ramsay hit a two-run double and Fisher plated the final run on a groundout.

Troy Scribner pitched the ninth inning, yielding a leadoff homer to Matt Chavez before retiring the next three batters in order, giving Lancaster the win.

Reliever Michael Freeman tossed 2.1 perfect innings of work for the JetHawks, including striking out the side in the top of the eighth.

The series continues on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. The JetHawks will send Austin Chrismon (6-3, 4.66) to the mound opposite Lake Elsinore's Kyle Lloyd (6-10, 4.67). The first 500 kids ages 12 and under will receive a JetHawks Lunch Box, courtesy of Theurer Orthodontics.
