Pirates' Meadows fractures orbital bone

Pittsburgh's No. 2 prospect injured during workout, to be examined
March 9, 2016

Pirates outfield prospect Austin Meadows suffered a fractured orbital bone during a workout on Tuesday, the team said.

Meadows, the Bucs' No. 2 prospect, will be re-examined next week in Pittsburgh. The 20-year-old reportedly has swelling around his right eye. Pirates trainer Todd Tomcyzk told Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Meadows was hit in the face by a ball while playing catch. It is unclear whether he will need surgery.

The left-handed outfielder was the Pirates' first-round pick in the 2013 Draft and has hit .312 with 17 homers, 93 RBIs and 26 stolen bases in 220 games over three seasons. He split last year between Class A Advanced Bradenton and Double-A Altoona, batting .310 with seven home runs, 55 RBIs and 21 steals in 127 games.

Meadows last missed time with an injury in July 2014 with Class A West Virginia before emerging last season and reaching Double-A. He was a Florida State League All-Star with the Marauders and was named a Rising Star in the Arizona Fall League last year.

The Georgia native hit .316 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in 48 games during his debut campaign in 2013.
