Giants send left-hander Mejia to Twins

Club's former No. 7 prospect heads to Minnesota for All-Star Nunez
July 28, 2016

Lots of players could be making travel arrangements in the next three days with the Major League non-waiver Trade Deadline approaching on Aug. 1. Adalberto Mejia's ticket to "The Show" looks like it will be punched in Minnesota.

The Giants sent their No. 7 prospect to the Twins on Thursday night in exchange for 2016 American League All-Star Eduardo Nunez. Mejia will head to Triple-A Rochester, according to MLB.com.

The 23-year-old left-hander has been in San Francisco's system since debuting in 2011. Mejia has pitched for Triple-A Sacramento and Double-A Richmond this season, going a combined 7-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 18 starts. He has fanned 101 and walked 27 in 105 2/3 innings, limiting opposing hitters to a .227 batting average.

"We're proud of what Mejia has done, to see him go is hard," San Francisco general manager Bobby Evans told MLB.com. "We knew that as we got into this Deadline, we were going to be asked for some heavy costs. It wasn't a surprise that he was asked about quite a bit."

In his Triple-A debut last month, Mejia scattered four hits and struck out eight over seven scoreless innings for the River Cats.

"He's more mature," Sacramento manager Jose Alguacil told MiLB.com. "He's a young guy at this age in Triple-A. Double-A is a big jump for a lot of guys and he's held his own very well. He did well last year and he's a guy with a bright future. He's going to keep growing from these games and keep getting better."

Mejia's key pitch is his fastball, which grades at 55 on MLB Pipeline's 20-to-80 scouting scale and reaches 95 mph. The southpaw similarly relies on his above-average command, which also rates 55.

The native of the Dominican Republic was named to the World Team for his year's MLB All-Star Futures Game and closed out his side's victory, striking out baseball's top prospect Alex Bregman in the ninth inning to clinch the win.

A first-time All-Star this year, infielder Nunez is batting .296 with 12 home runs, 47 RBIs and an AL-best 27 stolen bases in 91 games.
