MOBILE, Ala. (July 7, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, trimmed a five-run deficit down to two but were defeated 12-3 by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Sunday evening at Hank Aaron Stadium.
After falling behind 5-0 early, the BayBears (35-51 overall, 8-10 second half) got on the board in the third. Cam Williams ' first Double-A hit was a two-run homer in the fourth to cut Jacksonville's lead to 5-3. However, the BayBears went scoreless for the final five frames, and the Jumbo Shrimp (39-49, 10-8) tallied seven additional runs over the next two innings.
Isaac Mattson shined out of the bullpen, retiring the final 10 batters of the game. Mattson has set down 17 consecutive batters over his past two outings, and he has not allowed a run in 17 1/3 straight innings.
J.C. Millan and Riley Mahan both went 4-for-5 at the plate for Jacksonville. Mahan finished just a triple shy of the cycle.
Kolten Mahoney (2-0) earned the win with a quality start, while Luis Madero (4-6) took the loss.
The BayBears continue the six-game home series against Jacksonville Monday at 6:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Jeremy Beasley (4-5, 3.70 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Daniel Castano (1-0, 3.97 ERA) for the Jumbo Shrimp.
