BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 28, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, hit a pair of early home runs but fell 4-3 to the Birmingham Barons Friday night at Regions Field.
Jahmai Jones put the BayBears (31-46 overall, 4-5 second half) in front with a first-inning home run, his fourth of the season. After Birmingham (32-46, 5-4) plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, Brandon Sandoval tied the game with his second home run of the year in the top of the second.
However, the Barons scored four runs on six hits against Jeremy Beasley (3-5) in the first two frames. After the second inning, Mobile's pitching staff gave up just two additional hits over six scoreless innings. Isaac Mattson retired nine of the 10 batters he faced out of the bullpen and has not allowed a run in 11 consecutive innings.
Jo Adell recorded his 11th multi-hit game with the BayBears, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the fifth. Mobile loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning, but Codi Heuer induced a double play to end the game and earn his first save.
Matt Tomshaw (3-4) struck out eight batters and did not issue a walk in a seven-inning start for the Barons.
The BayBears wrap up the five-game road series against Birmingham Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly (1-2, 2.70 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw John Parke (0-0, 6.00 ERA) for the Barons.
