SALISBURY, MD - Behind a brilliant pitching performance from Brenan Hanifee, the Delmarva Shorebirds staved off a sweep at the hands of the Kannapolis Intimidators 4-0 on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Hanifee (6-3), the No. 7 prospect in the Orioles system, was masterful through a career-long eight innings for the Shorebirds (1-2, 36-34), scattering three singles while walking none, hitting a batter, and striking out four. He took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before giving up a one-out single to Carlos Perez.
Yosmer Solorzano (1-4) took the loss for the Intimidators (2-1, 41-29), allowing four runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings.
The Shorebirds showcased their offense early. Zach Jarrett pulled a two-out double to left in the bottom of the first, and Trevor Craport brought him home with an RBI single to open up the scoring at 1-0.
Will Robertson led off the second with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Three batters later, Max Hogan pushed it to 2-0 with an RBI single. Kirvin Moesquit followed by belting a double that one-hopped the wall in left, plating Hogan to make it 3-0.
Delmarva tacked on one more in the bottom of the fifth. Mason McCoy singled with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. Craport came through with two outs again, singling through the hole on the right side to plate McCoy for a 4-0 Shorebirds lead.
Hanifee worked out of trouble in the sixth after Perez's initial single and a two-base error in left. In the eighth, Perez and Nolan Brown again ended up at second and third after a two-out single and double. Hanifee quiet the threat by striking out Luis Curbelo to end the inning.
Ryan Wilson came on in the ninth for the Shorebirds and sent down the heart of the Kannapolis order to preserve the Shorebirds' eighth shutout win of the year.
Craport tallied a pair of two-out hits and RBIs plus a stolen base to lead the Shorebirds. Jarrett finished 2-for-4 with a double and run.
Carlos Perez was responsible for two of Kannapolis' three hits.
The Shorebirds open a new series against the Hagerstown Suns on Sunday evening. Matthias Dietz (6-1, 3.07) gets the start for Delmarva against Hagerstown's Tomas Alastre (3-2, 4.77). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. with gates opening at 4:00. Sunday is a Shorebirds Kids Club Game presented by Maryland Excels.
