Loons Rally Late and Win 13-8 in 10 innings over TinCaps
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Great Lakes Loons (65-50) (29-22) produced two runs in the ninth and five runs in the tenth to claw back and grab a 13-8 win in 10 innings over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (49-67) (22-28) on a 79-degree partly cloudy Friday night at Parkview Field.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Great Lakes Loons (65-50) (29-22) produced two runs in the ninth and five runs in the tenth to claw back and grab a 13-8 win in 10 innings over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (49-67) (22-28) on a 79-degree partly cloudy Friday night at Parkview Field.
- Fort Wayne’s Rosman Verdugo hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning to make it 7-6. The Loons entered the ninth down one. Jaron Elkins and Nico Perez each walked to put two on against TinCaps reliever Sean Barnett. With two outs, Eduardo Guerrero grounded a ball to third base that was stopped on a dive by Bradley Frye. Frye’s throw went into his dugout and both runners scored.
- Davis Chastain earned the win. The right-hander pushed the game into extras with a strikeout of Kerrington Cross with two in scoring position. Fort Wayne had two doubles in the ninth. Dylan Grego’s to start the inning and Robbie Lavey drove him home.
- Tied at 8-8, Chuck Davalan was the placed runner. Davalan moved to third base on a flyout to centerfield. After an Anson Aroz walk, Eduardo Quintero added his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field. Emil Morales continued the inning with a single to left field. Aroz advanced to third base, he slid in ahead of ball thrown in from left field.
- With runners on the corners, Morales darted to second base and Aroz went towards home. Catcher Robbie Lavey pumped a throw towards second and ran at Aroz. The ball was lobbed to Bradley Frye who was unable to tag Aroz, who dove down to avoid the glove and snuck through the legs of an off balance Frye and back to the base.
- Later in the tenth, Jaron Elkins walked to load the bases. Nico Perez next-up drove a ball to left center field to clear the bases for a three-run double. Mairo Martinus slapped a single to right field to plate Perez and make it a five-run tenth inning.
- Dilan Figueredo earned the final three outs to close the game for Great Lakes.
- Great Lakes scored their first six runs in the first six innings. Three bases loaded walks gave Great Lakes a three-run fourth inning. A Kerrington Cross drop at first base should have been the final out of the sixth but allowed Eduardo Quintero to score. Quintero added the first two runs of the game with a two-run single in the second inning.
- The TinCaps plated five runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Bradley Frye connected on a three-run home run.
Rounding Things Out
West Michigan lost today. The Whitecaps now have a 1.5 game lead over the Loons in the Midwest League East Division second half standings. Great Lakes has 15 games left this season.
